PlayVS and Urban One Launch National HBCU Esports Community
Share
In a historic move during Black History Month, PlayVS and Urban One have announced a three-year partnership to establish a dedicated competitive gaming home for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) nationwide. This collaboration integrates a new HBCU-focused infrastructure within the PlayVS College League (PCL), designed to provide students with expanded access to competition, media visibility, and professional opportunities in the gaming industry.
Building a Sustainable Pipeline
This initiative combines Urban One’s extensive reach within the Black community with the established collegiate infrastructure of PlayVS. Beyond competition, the partnership aims to create a sustainable pipeline connecting K-12 gamers to higher education opportunities at HBCUs across the country.
"Black culture drives the gaming industry, yet our students are often underrepresented in the ecosystem behind it," said Tiffany Nasralla, CRO of Urban One. "By partnering with PlayVS, we are changing that narrative... giving them the national stage they deserve".
A Unified Stage for All HBCUs
The National HBCU Esports Community is designed to be inclusive, offering a platform for any HBCU regardless of whether they have an established program or are just starting their esports journey.
Jaden Roberts, President of Howard's Esports Association, noted the significance of the partnership: "For our students, esports is more than just competition; it is a gateway to technology, media, and leadership".
Strategic Rollout Timeline
PlayVS and Urban One are utilizing a phased approach to ensure thoughtful development and institutional alignment:
- Spring and Summer 2026: Focused on community building, recruitment, and outreach to HBCU institutions.
- Fall 2026: Institutions will begin competing within the PlayVS College League and in dedicated HBCU-focused invitational events.
- Spring 2027: The official inaugural season of the National HBCU Esports Community will formally launch.
Amplifying Student Voices
Urban One will serve as the lead entity for content distribution and media amplification, using its portfolio of brands to spotlight the unique campus culture and academic excellence of participating HBCUs.
"This partnership bridges the gap between competitive gaming and the vibrant culture of HBCUs, meeting our students exactly where they are," added Christopher Turner, Esports Program Director at Southern University.
